On the 10th of December, I was part of a group of year 12 students who, along with volunteers from Good Neighbours, delivered Christmas plants and parcels to some of the elderly residents of Ilkley.
We had a great morning, and it was so nice to be able to have a chat with some of the people from a generation who have experienced lives that we haven’t. One of the couples we visited, recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, which is an extraordinary achievement that I found extremely difficult to comprehend at my age.
The happiness of some of the people in the community when we arrived and delivered their plants and packages was amazing and completely over-whelming; it was so lovely to hear about their plans for over the Christmas period, too.
Overall, it was a fantastically festive morning for all the year 12s who participated. It definitely made us consider how other people are spending Christmas, and to be more mindful of the older members in our local area, which I think captures the true spirit of Christmas.
