Review: Inside No. 9. S5, E2 – Death Be Not Proud

Death Be Not Proud was based on the series of Psychoville, the famous dark comedy of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith which aired between 2009 and 2011. If you loved Psychoville then you’ll massively enjoy this episode of Inside No. 9.

I myself have not watched Psychoville so this episode did not have the same effect on me as it did on others, however, it was still a strikingly good episode which I would recommend for others to watch. I am now currently looking for the old series of Psychoville to enjoy the magic once again.

The episode started with a couple who had just bought their dream home in London, however, when they explore more of their house they discover it is not all that it seems. Beattie, played by the fantastic Jenna Coleman, discovered that the house was haunted. At first, there are hints of Pyschoville such as a body in the bathtub and eyes rolling down the stairs. It is not till later that we are transported back in town to the mysterious story of Psychoville.

We are introduced to the last owner who is called David played by Steve Pemberton. David goes on to tell Beattie his story and why the house is haunted. The episode is told as a sequel to Psychoville and I would encourage all previous viewers to watch this episode.

For myself, I found the episode enjoyable, if a little bit strange but simply because I had not watched Psychoville but I would recommend it anyway as the clever writing and suspension make it a very clever episode to watch.

I rate this episode 3 out of 5 stars.
